Recommendations after teeth whitening - what can and cannot be done?

More and more people want to boast a snow-white smile and opt for professional teeth whitening. However, if the effect is to last for years, they must follow specific rules. So what are the recommendations after tooth whitening? You will read about this in today's text.

If you are interested in the topic of teeth whitening we recommend our article "Teeth whitening in the UK - find out about prices and possible options', in which we have compiled the most important information. Back to the topic.

Recommendations after tooth whitening - the first week

Importantly, you should wait about 2 hours with your first meal after the treatment. However, for a period of up to 7 days, you must not eat foods that are staining. It is best to follow a so-called white diet.

The following are prohibited: red cabbage, peppers, carrotsbeetroot and red borscht, among other things. For a week, forget anything with cocoa in it, as well as a lot of spices. Blueberries, blueberries, cherries or currants, as well as dark sauces should also not be eaten.

Spices such as turmeric, curry, hot or sweet peppers, cinnamon should also disappear from your menu for the first 7 days. Also watch out for citrus fruits - they contain acids that can cancel out the effect.

Recommendations after teeth whitening also include avoiding drinks such as coffee, tea or fruit juices.

What is allowed to eat and drink after teeth whitening?

It is advisable to drink water (this can accompany us even just after the treatment). Eat dairy products and vegetables that do not stain - corn, white beans or cauliflower. Also go boldly for celery, cucumbers and potatoes.

White bread and oatmeal, groatsPasta and rice do not stand in the way of a white smile either. Just remember not to add anything to them that might stain your newly whitened teeth!

It is also advisable to eat poultry meat and fish. Just remember to choose your spices carefully!

What else to watch out for after whitening?

Up to two weeks after treatment, drinks that are very cold or very hot are prohibited. A sudden change in temperature can significantly weaken the effect.

What's more, there is an absolute ban on smoking. These will cause stains to appear on your teeth. You can read more about this topic here: "Discolouration on teeth - where it comes from, how to prevent it and how to remove it".

During this period, too, it is a good idea to use a mild whitening toothpaste recommended by your specialist.

What does the effect depend on?

If you dream of a snow-white smile, you will not always be able to achieve it through teeth whitening. The effect depends on several factors - including individual predisposition, age or genes. You can read more about this in our article "What tooth colour depends on".

If this is the case, you can always opt for veneers, i.e. special trays on your teeth. Thanks to them you will not only change the colour of your teeth, but also their shape. We wrote more about this solution in the text "Dental veneers in the UK. Everything you need to know". However, think seriously before you make a decision - when fitting veneers, it is necessary to chip part of the enamel, thus making it a lifelong decision.

Therefore, if you want to have a white smile it is best to contact your dentist who will outline the best options for you. He or she will also make specific recommendations after teeth whitening that you will need to follow.
