When an orthodontist talks about braces for a child, many parents immediately imagine fixed braces. Meanwhile, in many cases, the best solution at the beginning of treatment is Twin Block braces. This appliance helps to correct the alignment of the jaw during the growth period and can significantly simplify further orthodontic treatment. Find out when it is applied, what the preparation is like and how long the treatment usually lasts.
What is a Twin Block camera?
Twin Block braces are removable orthodontic appliances that help to bring the lower jaw into the correct position. It consists of two parts - an upper plate and a lower plate - which work together when the mouth is closed, allowing the lower jaw to move forward and gradually assume the correct position.
This is important because many malocclusions in children is due precisely to a receding mandible. If the problem is detected early, the orthodontist can use the natural growth of the jaws to correct the bite alignment. Twin Block thus works not only on the teeth, but also on the development of the facial bones.
For many children, braces are comfortable to wear as they can be removed for eating and brushing teeth. At the same time, it requires regularity - the child should wear it for most of the day. This ensures that the treatment has a real effect.

In which cases is the Twin Block used?
Twin Block orthodontic braces are most often recommended by orthodontists for children aged around 8-14 years. This is a time when the jaws are still growing intensively and orthodontic treatment can take advantage of the body's natural development.
The most common indication is a receded mandible and the so-called backbite (you can read more about it in the here). In this situation, the upper teeth protrude clearly in front of the lower teeth. This can affect not only the appearance of the smile, but also the way you bite and chew.
Early treatment reduces the risk of more complicated treatment in the future. Often fixed braces are still needed after treatment with Twin Block, but the whole process is then simpler and shorter.

What does the whole process look like?
Preparation of the braces begins with a diagnostic visit. The orthodontist carefully assesses the child's bite, takes impressions of the teeth or an oral scan and plans the treatment.
On the basis of this data, the laboratory produces individual braces to fit your child's teeth. Twin Block braces are always made to order, as they must fit the dental arches perfectly.
At the next visit, the orthodontist fits the braces and shows the child and parents how to put them on and take them off. Parents are also given instructions on hygiene and how long to wear the braces.
Treatment time depends on the age of the child and type of malocclusion. Most often, the therapy lasts from about 6 to 12 months. Wearing braces regularly for most of the day is crucial.
The child usually removes the appliance only for eating and brushing teeth. If he or she wears it as prescribed, changes in the position of the jaw can be noticed after only a few months.

What to look out for as a parent?
Orthodontic treatment in a child always requires the cooperation of the whole family. It is the parents who most often make sure that the braces are worn regularly and that the child takes proper care of them.
It is also worth watching whether the camera causes abrasions or discomfort. If something raises your concerns, it is best to contact your orthodontic office and consult the problem.
A good working relationship with your orthodontist and regular check-ups make a huge difference to the results of treatment. As a result, Twin Block orthodontic braces can effectively help correct the bite and provide your child with a healthy smile for years to come.
