Porcelain crowns in the UK - everything you need to know

Porcelain crowns in the UK are an option to replace partial cavities in the teeth if a filling is no longer possible. Our patients rave about porcelain crowns - they are durable, permanently fixed, very comfortable to wear and cost less than £30 per month. What else do you need to know about them?

Porcelain crown in the UK - when is it worth it and what are the indications?

You could say that a crown is a kind of overlay on a tooth. Thanks to this overlay, the smile can look aesthetically pleasing despite damage when it is not possible to fill it by other means.

Indications for porcelain crown placement in the UK are partial cavities in the teeth. They may be the result of, for example, untreated caries. But not only - it is worth mentioning that porcelain crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of teeth which, for example, have not developed sufficiently.

Crowns are also used in the closure of diastemas. You can read more about them here: "Gap between teeth - where does it come from and how can it be removed?".

How do we divide porcelain crowns in the UK?

How do we divide porcelain crowns in the UK?

Depending on the individual patient's needs (missing teeth), we distinguish between partial, shielding, full, subgingival, gingival and supragingival crowns.

Porcelain crowns are also made on a variety of bases -  metal, ceramic composite or acrylic. The latter look much more natural due to their colour - in the former case, the metal may slightly shine through. Porcelain crowns on a composite framework are a less expensive solution than the rest, but not as durable. As for crowns on an acrylic framework, they are simply a temporary restoration.

An alternative to porcelain crowns is zirconia crowns - read more about them in our article: "Crowns for teeth in the UK - everything you need to know".

How is the crown fitted?

On your first visit, you can expect to have your tooth ground. Don't worry - this is completely painless, as local anaesthesia will be applied. Then it is time to create your individual model. Unpleasant impressions used to be used, but in our office we use another, better method. It is a scanner - the preparation of the model is both more pleasant for the patient and more accurate!

After your first visit, you will leave with a temporary crown. The fitting of the 'real' crown will take place during the second one. Of course, before the dentist does this, he or she must first check that the restoration fits. If everything is in order, you can enjoy your beautiful smile again!

How to care for a dental crown?

Caring for the hygiene of a porcelain crown is not much different from maintaining proper oral hygiene on a regular basis. Make sure you wash them regularly and use the right toothpaste. Don't skip flossing either! It is worth mentioning that the transition area between the crown and the root is particularly prone to plaque build-up. Therefore, remember to pay attention to clean this area thoroughly!

Also visit your dentist regularly - when everything is fine, twice a year is enough. If you are looking for a good clinic in the UK, get in touch with us!
